TMJ Disorder and Jaw Clicking

TMJ disorders can cause clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew. This may be an early warning which may eventually lead to jaw pain or even future limitation of jaw movement.

TMJ Disorder

Dental caries (cavities) and Periodontitis have been long thought as the two most frequent diseases in dentistry. However recently, a third illness has attracted much attention and that is TMJ disorder 0r TMD.

Question: Do you suffer in silence from one or more of the following signs and symptoms?

  • ·        Chronic recurrent Headache
  • ·        Pain or tenderness of your jaw
  • ·        Aching facial Pain
  • ·        Sore jaw muscles upon waking up
  • ·        Ear Pain, ringing, buzzing
  • ·        Tender clicks or pops in the jaw joint upon opening or closing your mouth
  • ·        Difficulties, pain or discomfort while chewing and/or speaking
  • ·        Difficulty in moving the jaw or opening the mouth fully
  • ·        Locking of your jaw joint, making it difficult to close or open your mouth.
  • ·        Neck Pain

Answer: It could be TMJ Disorder (TMD).

In recent times these symptoms, appearing unrelated, were frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as migraine, tension headache, neuritis, neuralgia…etc. As a result many patients with TMD were not treated correctly. Since conventional management for these types of symptoms proved ineffective, patients were frequently labeled as neurotic, fixated and some were branded as "it's all in the head" type.

Today, it is well established that these often unexplained, undiagnosed, misdiagnosed and therefore untreated symptoms are related to a collection of problems called, Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD).

Prevention is better than cure..!

On the other hand certain signs such as tooth grinding or clenching habit...Etc may indicate the potential for TMJ disorders to develop.

This highlights the importance of prevention in terms of early diagnosis and treatment of such illness.
